A leader of Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader was shot and critically injured in Dhenkanal district. Police said a man was arrested Saturday for the crime.

Jasobant Parida, 38, district president of the BJD's youth wing, was shot at on his belly and hand Friday evening, police said.

Superintendent of Police Manoranjan Mohanty told IANS that police have arrested the attacker who had come on a motorcycle. The motive behind the crime was yet to be ascertained.

The incident took place when Parida was standing near his medicine shop in a crowded area of Kamakhyanagar town, about 100 km from Bhubaneswar.

Parida was shifted to a hospital at Cuttack where his condition was said to be critical.
