A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator was shot dead in Varanasi, police said.
Shiv Seth, 40, was the corporator from Rampurwa ward. He was returning home when unidentified assailants opened fire at him in Bhelupur area on Tuesday night, the police said.
Seth who was shot in the head, was declared dead after being rushed to a hospital.
A case against unidentified persons has been registered and investigations are underway, a police official told IANS.
Circle Officer (CO) Bhelupur DP Shukla said all possible angles behind the killing were being explored.
The murder of a BJP corporator in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency was an indication of the worsening law and order situation in the state, BJP spokesman Vijay Bajhadur Pathak said.
A few days back a ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) corporator Bantu Yadav was shot at during a funeral in the state capital.
Yadav is battling for life in a city hospital. Four persons were arrested in connection with the shooting.
