Senior Congress leader and former Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Tuesday accused the BJP government at the Centre and states of "trying to tinker" with history to suit its needs.

"The BJP is trying to tinker with history by trying to place Bharatiya Jana Sangh supremo Deendayal Upadhyaya as the father of the nation and certain RSS leaders as freedom fighters. Already in BJP ruled states, rewriting of history has begun as is seen in certain school text books," said Antony.

Antony was speaking at the party headquarters here, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel and the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

"The Congress party has no qualms with joining hands with all those who have a secular outlook. Indira Gandhi was one leader who upheld the secular outlook at all times, while Patel when he felt that the RSS was treading the wrong path, went to the extent of banning it," said Antony.

Coming down heavily on demonetisation and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Antony said Modi was hedging on what gains were made on account of demonetisation.

"Modi however will have to answer about this in the 'people's court', if not the Congress party will make Modi answer this question," added Antony.
