The Brazilian government has received over $4.8 million for continuing their actions to protect the ozone layer, officials said.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Environment said that the money was agreed during recent meetings in Montreal, Canada, at which Brazil presented its actions to eliminate harmful compounds as part of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, first signed in 1987, Xinhua reported.
The resources were approved by the executive committee charged with implementing the Montreal Protocol.
Despite environmental concerns, such as the deforestation of the Amazon, Brazil has been rewarded for its contribution to the targets set by the Protocol.
According to official statistics, Brazil has cut its emissions of polluting gases by 34 per cent in recent years, and has set the target of removing gases caused by air conditioners and aerosols by 2040.
Brazil joined the Montreal Protocol in 2010. Since then, Brazil has received $35 million from the Multilateral Fund for Implementation of the Montreal Protocol to eliminate greenhouse gases.
