For the first time, the two-week-long India International Trade Fair (IITF) held here earlier this month, was powered without using diesel gensets, saving 1.27 lakh litres of the fuel, said BSES, one of Delhi's two distribution companies (discoms), on Tuesday.
BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) successfully augmented its distribution network in record time to accomplish this feat, the discom said in a statement.
"It was first time that no diesel gensets were used to power the trade fair and probably (first time) an event of this magnitude was organised in Delhi solely on grid power," the statement said.
Last month, the country's Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) banned the use of diesel generators in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
"A BRPL team worked round the clock to gear up its system and energised a temporary connection of additional 3 MVA (mega-volt ampere) in a record time. ITPO (India Trade Promotion Organisation) had an existing sanctioned load of 5.95 MW (megawatt) at the venue," it said.
The discom also installed three "990 KVA (kilo-volt ampere) transformers and deployed mobile packaged sub-stations inside the venue, besides laying around 1 km of cable", it added.
"The entire exercise managed to save 1.27 lakh litres of diesel. If the gensets were used for power supply at the event, the use of the fossil fuel would have resulted in emission of 2,160 kg of nitrogen oxide and 135 kg of PM2.5 emissions in the atmosphere," BRPL Chief Executive Amal Sinha said in the statement.
The BSES had during the India-New Zealand T20 match electrified the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground here solely on grid power from the discom.
