Central team will redress NIT students' grievances: Minister

The visiting central team will resolve the problems faced by students protesting in the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Jammu and Kashmir soon, union minister Ram Shankar Katheria said here on Wednesday.

"The three-member central team, which rushed to the NIT - Srinagar from New Delhi, will talk to the aggrieved students and resolve their problems," the minister of state for human resource development told reporters here.

He said: "Some students in various educational institutions in the country are agitating. Talks with the students are very urgent. We will try to redress their grievances. Most problems can be solved through talks."

Asking students to abide by the country's laws, the minister said all people, specially the students, must be respectful to the country and its constitution.

Earlier, Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani told reporters in Surat on Wednesday that the HRD ministry team will remain stationed at the NIT till the exams are over. The NIT exams will begin on April 11.

She said the team met the students, whose concerns will be addressed.

Trouble began in the NIT - Srinagar after two groups of students clashed on March 31 after the West Indies defeated India in the T20 World Cup championship match.

Meanwhile, Katheria inaugurated Golden Jubilee Knowledge Centre at the NIT in Agartala on Wednesday, besides a building at the Tripura Central University.
