The top Chinese and home favourite was beaten by Russian Evgeniya Rodina 5-7, 3-6, Xinhua reported.
Fifth seeded Kristina Mladenovic from France and Alison Riske of the United States both moved into the second round, beating Chinese Liu Fangzhou and Han Xinyun, respectively, in straight sets.
