The CPI-M on Tuesday said the Supreme Court should oversee the CBI probe into the Vyapam scam and asked Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to quit until this gets over.

"The CPI-M demands that a thorough enquiry by the CBI under the supervision of the Supreme Court must be conducted into this sordid affair and the guilty should be identified and punished," it said after a two-day politburo meeting that ended here.

"This should be done with urgency in order to prevent further deaths related to this scam," the Communist Party of India-Marxist said. "Until these investigations are completed, it is untenable for the MP chief minister to continue in office."

The CPI-M statement described the Vyapam recruitment scandal as a

"deadly cocktail of crime and corruption" in which a large number of witnesses had been murdered under suspicious circumstances.

The CPI-M also reiterated its demand for the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for their links with former IPL chief Lalit Modi.

"A thorough enquiry into this whole scam must be conducted and until its findings are considered and appropriate action under the law taken, both these persons should demit office.

"Their continuation in such positions is not tenable during the enquiry period," it said.
