One person was killed and many were injured on Wednesday in a communal clash in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur district, police said.
Tension was reported in Milkepur village on Tuesday night when an altercation over a trivial issue spun out of control between Hindus and Muslims.
After village elders intervened and pacified both sides, they retreated, police said. On Wednesday, however, they regrouped and clashed.
The incident occurred when a 15-year-old boy was allegedly shot dead by a member of the other community. As the news spread, both communities hurled stones and fired at each other, police sources said.
"While the situation has been brought under control, tempers are running high and the situation continues to be tense," a home department official told IANS.
