An uneasy calm prevailed at Khambhat town in central Gujarat following communal clashes on Tuesday, forcing police to impose overnight curfew.
Police sources said the trouble began after two groups from different religious communities had heated arguments over an incident of alleged eve teasing.
The groups resorted to stone-throwing and arson, leading to the burning of three shops, a residential premises and vehicles at Peeth Bazaar.
Except a police sub-inspector who sustained minor injuries while controlling the clashing groups, nobody else was injured, police said.
Police imposed curfew at 9 p.m. but lifted it on Wednesday morning. There was tension in the town and police patrolling had been stepped up.
The government has pressed four teams of the State Reserve Police to bring the situation under control. No arrests have been made been so far.
