The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday attacked the Congress for fielding Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad in Kerala and weakening the opposition fighting against the BJP.

Speaking to the media, AAP leader Gopal Rai called the decision "surprising".

"There appears to be a contradiction in the publicly stated strategy of the Congress for getting rid of Modi government and its intentions," Rai said.

"Instead of concentrating on removing a dictatorial and anti-federal regime of the BJP and Modi, the Congress seems to be weakening the opposition by dividing votes where the opposition is strong," he said.

He said although several leaders in past have contested from two seats, Rahul Gandhi could have chosen Karnataka or Tamil Nadu.

"But he choose Kerala, where the Left is strong," Rai said.

"Look at what the Congress is doing in UP, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and in Delhi. Instead of concentrating in states where there is a direct BJP and Congress contest, the Congress is focusing on regions which have presence of strong anti-BJP forces," he said.

"Even in Delhi, Congress has been in a state of confusion for the last three months and is unable to decide whether it wants to defeat BJP or not.

Anti-BJP parties are unable to understand what Congress wants to achieve," Rai said.
