Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday said that all schools should construct separate toilets for girl students within a year.

"Every school should build separate toilets for girls in a year so that our girl children do not leave schools," Modi said while delivering his maiden address on India's 68th Independence Day.

He also said that it should not be difficult for the country to build toilets so that old women and young girls do not have to wait for the day to become dark before easing themselves.

"You would be think that from the Red Fort he is talking about cleanliness and toilets but I am speaking from the heart," Modi added.

He also announced a clean India campaign from Oct 2, as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
