The CPI-M on Tuesday hailed the "lakhs of people" for taking to the streets a day earlier against demonetisation but clarified that there never was a Bharat Bandh on Monday.
"The CPI-M greets the ... people who came onto the streets to protest against the attack on their livelihood and the burdens imposed upon the people through the withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes," it said.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP had misleadingly called the national protest day on Monday as a 'Bharat Bandh'.
"None of the opposition parties which joined the protest had called for a Bharat Bandh. In fact it is the Modi government which has imposed an economic bandh on the country through demonetisation."
The CPI-M urged all opposition parties and trade unions to continue the protests to ensure that people can use the old notes for all transactions till adequate alternative arrangements were made.
The November 8 demonetisation has triggered an unprecedented cash crunch in the country.
