The CPI-M on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court for striking down section 66A of the IT Act, saying the court had ruled in defence of people's civil liberties and fundamental rights.

"The draconian provision of 66A was used to arrest people who express dissenting views against the government and the state and to suppress criticism of those in power," the Communist Party of India-Marxist said.

The CPI-M said that it welcomed "this landmark judgment".
