CPI-M central committee member Shyamali Gupta died here Monday following a cardiac arrest, party sources said. She was 68.
A widow, she is survived by her son, daughter-in-law and a grandson.
Gupta was a member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist's West Bengal secretariat.
She stepped down as president of the All India Democratic Women's Association at its recent conference at Bodhgaya in Bihar.
Born June 1, 1945, Gupta was involved in the student movement and took part in protests against the Vietnam war in the 1960s. She became a member of the undivided Communist Party of India in 1963.
In 2000, Gupta was elected as president of AIDWA and held the post for 10 years.
She was elected to CPI-M West Bengal state committee in 1985 and served as a state secretariat member from 2010.
