The CPI-M on Saturday demanded a time-bound independent inquiry into the causes of the flyover collapse in Kolkata which killed 26 people.

In a statement, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo expressed its deep grief at the loss of life and grievous injuries caused by the collapse of the under-construction flyover.

It said that the party and its mass organisations have been actively involved in providing relief to the victims and a blood donation camp was organised to provide fresh blood to those injured and languishing in the hospitals.

"There are now reports in the media indicating a nexus between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the sub-contractors who were assigned various works in connection with construction of this flyover.

"It has now become imperative that there should be a time-bound high level independent enquiry into the causes of this tragedy. This is necessary to establish the culpability and, on that basis, to punish the guilty," the statement said.

The party said that investigation should be conducted immediately by an independent inquiry committee.

West Bengal Police have arrested three officials of the joint venture company -- Hyderabad-based IVRCL Infrastructure -- which was executing the flyover project.

A 23-member special investigation team (SIT) has been set up to probe the disaster.
