CPI-M activists staged protests here on Monday while the state's ruling Congress sought immediate relief to the common man from the chaos the central government has created owing to demonetisation of high-value currency notes.

In a memorandum submitted to Governor Acharya Devrat here by Congress leaders, led by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, as part of the 'Jan Aakrosh Diwas', they said the central government has failed to provide relief to the farmers and workers, and even the common man was hit hard.

However, buses and trains plied normally across the state. Shops, restaurants and eating joints were also open.

Government offices and educational institutions also functioned normally and there was no report of violence anywhere in the state, a police official told IANS here.

Slogan-shouting Communist Party of India-Marxist activists staged protests across Shimla, creating traffic chaos at several places.

CPI-M state secretary Onkar Shad said farmers and small traders were worst hit with the demonetisation.

State Congress chief Sukhwinder Sukhu said the party had already protested on November 24 over the mess created in the whole country after demonetisation.
