Delhi CM launches innovative power transformer for space crunch

In an innovative solution to urban space crunch, Delhi's first 2 MVA distribution transformer was inaugurated on Thursday by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at a locality here in the jurisiction of BSES, one of the capital's two power distribution companies (discoms).

"After deploying innovative solutions like a Double-Decker sub station, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) has now deployed Delhi's first 2 MVA (mega volt amps) distribution transformer," a BSES statement said here.

"Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated the transformer in Joga Bai Extension near Jamia. The present load of the area is around 3.8 MVA and the existing distribution transformer in the area is heavily overloaded, for want of space for augmenting the network," it said.

"To overcome the challenge, BSES's engineering team developed a 2 MVA distribution transformer on a pilot basis. After studying the results, this will be deployed in other congested areas also," it added.

According to the discom, "this hermetically sealed transformer takes marginally higher space than a 990 KVA (kilovolt amps) transformer but enhances the distribution capacity by two times."

"It is also almost maintenance free."

Commenting on the deployment, BRPL Chief Executive Amal Sinha said: "We have spent around Rs 10 crore in preparing for the summer of 2017 in the Jamia Nagar area by setting up a power transformer and new feeders and plan to spend upto Rs 4 crore before the next summer season."

Earlier this year, BSES announced the first deployment in Delhi of "Double-Decker Sub Stations" in congested areas to augment its distribution network.

In May, BRPL commissioned Delhi's first "Double-Decker" substation in Sangam Vihar, a heavily congested area in south Delhi. It is a 630 KVA substation, which measures 6.25 square metres vis-a-vis 20 square metres for its conventional counterpart "at almost the same price", the discom said.

"After the successful completion of the pilot, 50 more such Double-Decker Substations are planned over the next few months," it added.
