Delhi Metro on Wednesday announced that notes of denomination Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 will be accepted at all its stations till the midnight of November 11.
The notes could be used to purchase tokens and to recharge the smart cards for 72 hours. In the morning, there was confusion among commuters due to announcement at metro stations that these banknotes will not be accepted.
"We had not been given any mandate as such from the government on whether we could accept the 500 and 1,000 rupees notes or not. But now that we have received an information, we have conveyed it you," a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official clarified to IANS.
"As clarified by the Ministry of Finance high value denomination currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 shall be accepted for next 72 hours, that is, till November 11 midnight," a statement released by DMRC read.
