A 30-year-old Delhi Police constable was shot dead Monday night by two liquor suppliers, police said Tuesday. Both accused have been arrested.

Karamveer was patrolling near Jhangola village in west Delhi's Alipur area with a Delhi Police home guard Surender Singh, 39, when he received information that some people in the area were trying to smuggle liquor.

Surender Singh later told police that he along with Karamveer left the Alipur police station around 10 p.m. Monday for patrolling.

"Karamveer and Surender saw two men on a motorcycle with two cartons of liquor bottles. Karamveer identified one of the liquor suppliers and signalled him to stop his motorcycle," a police official said.

The official said the driver tried to accelerate his motorcycle after noticing Karamveer. But the constable pulled down the pillion rider, identified as Lala, from the moving motorbike.

The motorcycle lost its balance and fell on the road a few metres away, he said.

Meanwhile the home guard chased the motorcycle and caught the other accused, identified as Nikku, the official said.

In the meantime, the official said, Lala shot at (Karamveer) and the bullet pierced his chest. "Later both the accused managed to flee from the spot on their motorcycle."

The constable, who was inducted in Delhi Police in 2006, was rushed to a hospital in Narela where he succumbed to his injury.

Both the accused were arrested Tuesday morning from their hideouts, the official added.

Karamveer, who was posted in Alipur police station for over one-and-half years, belonged to Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district and was residing at Narela's Police Colony in the capital, said the official.
