Faced with an onion crisis, the Delhi government on Tuesday requested Maharashtra to clamp down on the reported hoarding and black-marketing of the vegetable.
The city's food and civil supplies minister Asim Ahmed Khan has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to crack down on hoarders of onions.
"It is felt that availability of onions in market can be increased to some extent by preventing hoarding and black-marketing tendencies which may have crept in," Khan said in the letter.
Earlier on Monday, the theft of 700 kg of onions was reported in Mumbai.
Along with states like Madhya Pradesh and Karnatka, Delhi depends on Maharashtra for the supply of onions.
Onion prices have reached as high as Rs.70 per kg despite the Delhi government selling the vegetable at Rs.30 per kg in fair price shops.
