Borussia Dortmund on Saturday announced that forward Henrikh Mkhitaryan will move to Manchester United next football season in what could be a big signing for the English club.

The 27-year-old Armenia captain, who scored 23 goals in 52 games for Dortmund last season, was contracted with the Bundesliga club till 2017. He has reportedly cost United around $40 million.

He will be a big boost for United as new head coach Jose Mourinho bids to reshape his squad.

United have already signed defender Eric Bailly and talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, with Mkhitaryan the third arrival of a supremely busy transfer window.

Dortmund confirmed the move on Twitter, revealing that the Armenian has moved to United.

"Henrikh Mkhitaryan moves to Manchester United. Details to follow," Dortmund tweeted.

For Dortmund, Mkhitaryan is the third player to leave the club this summer. Defender Mats Hummels and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan have signed for Bayern Munich and Manchester City respectively.

He was named Bundesliga Players' Player of the Season in 2015-16 after scoring 18 goals in all competitions.

Mkhitaryan began his career at Armenian side Pyunik, before playing for both Metalurh and Shakhtar Donetsk, prior to his move to Dortmund.

The versatile forward, who can play as a winger as well as an attacking midfielder, has scored 104 goals in 298 club games, and has also won 59 caps for his country.

He is the son of one of Armenia's most famous footballers, Hamlet Mkhitaryan.
