Drunk drivers should be dealt with iron hand: Delhi court

A Delhi Court has ordered seven days' imprisonment to a driver who had allegedly misbehaved with the police in an inebriated condition, and said "such offenders required to be dealt with an iron hand".

"Drunk driving is a menace and it requires to be dealt with an iron hand," Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma said in his order delivered on August 3.

The Magistrate also noted that in the instant case driver Harvinder Pal Singh misbehaved with the police official after being issued 'challan' (punitive token) on August 2.

According to the prosecution, on August 2 at about 11.25 p.m., Singh was driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol in a way which was dangerous to public at large. He was stopped by the police officer, when Singh misbehaved.

A case was registered against Singh at Tuglak Road police station under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

In the court, accused Singh claimed that he was not under the influence of alcohol. However, on seeing the record which confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol, Singh pleaded guilty to all the offences.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,500 on him.

Later, Singh's defence counsel told the court that he was going to file an appeal in the higher court to seek suspension of sentence and pleaded for bail.

The court granted him bail to file the appeal in the higher court.
