Defending champion Ashton Eaton of the United States shattered the decathlon world record and won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships here on Saturday.
Eaton bettered his own world mark of 9,039 by six points after finishing third in the last event -- 1,500 metres at the Bird's Nest stadium, reports Xinhua.
It was the first world record in two world championships and Eaton will get an extra $100,000 bonus on top of his winner's check of $60,000.
Damian Warner took the silver medal with a Canadian record of 8,689 points. Rico Freimuth of Germany pocketed the bronze medal with 8,561 points.
