Egypt has extended the state of emergency that was scheduled to end Thursday by two months, Xinhua reported citing the official MENA news agency.

Interim President Adli Mansour decided to extend the state of emergency by two months as of 4 p.m. (2 p.m. GMT) Thursday, said the president's spokesman Ihab Badawi.

The extension is based on the security conditions in the country and after the approval of the cabinet, Badawi said in a statement.

Mansour initially announced a month-long state of emergency, and imposed a curfew when unrest hit the country after the government dispersed supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo Aug 14.

The curfew was shortened twice. It now runs from 11 p. m. (9 p.m. GMT) to 6 a.m. (4 a.m. GMT), while on Fridays it is extended by four hours, starting from 7 p.m. (5 p.m. GMT).
