An elephant trampled a man to death in northern West Bengal's Dooars forest area, forest officials said.

The gruesome incident took place on Thursday night on the Lataguri-Mahakal Mandir Road of Jalpaiguri district as Sadik Rahman, 40, a security guard, made no attempt to step into his vehicle, which is the normal custom when any elephant crosses a highway.

The pachyderm attacked Rahman, stepped on him, and kicked him repeatedly from one side of the road to the middle, the officials added.

He died on the spot.
