The five Indian fishermen, who were on death row in Sri Lanka, are being released due to the steps taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit said.
"The release is owing to the steps taken by Indian prime minister and the external affairs minister," Tamilisai Soundararajan said in a statement Wednesday.
She said the news of five Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu being released by Sri Lanka gives them happiness and peace.
The day is not far off when a permanent solution to the problem of Indian fishermen being attacked by Lankan Navy will be found, she said.
Five Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu were sentenced to death last month by a Lankan court on the charges of smuggling drugs.
India took up the issue at the highest levels in Sri Lanka to secure their release.
