The Mizoram police have arrested five persons, including a young woman, for spreading false information on social media, police said Friday.
"Ruth Chalthansawmi, 23 and her four boy friends were arrested Thursday on charges of spreading false news on social media," a police official said.
The official said that the girl and her accomplices allegedly posted on a social networking site that a girl was gang raped and died after being brought to the Aizawl Civil Hospital.
Police immediately launched a probe and found that the news was false.
The accused were later booked under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act and section 203 of the Indian Penal Code.
Police were interrogating them to learn why they spread the false news.
According to police, 50 people have been booked in Mizoram under cyber laws since 2009 with 24 people arrested last year.
