The dismal flood situation in West Bengal, which has claimed over 70 lives, has improved but the release of water from barrages continues to be an issue, Irrigation Minister Rajib Banerjee said on Tuesday.

"The situation is improving. The rainfall has also decreased so it will continue getting better. We are talking to officials at the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) as the release of water from the dam is a problem," said Rajib Banerjee.

He said tidal water inflow is also adding to the inundation. Heavy rains due to cyclone Komen have affected over 36 lakh people in 12 districts.

At least 3.6 lakh people have been sheltered in 2,213 relief camps.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday blamed the release of water from barrages for the deterioration of the flood situation. She announced compensation for the flood-affected residents.

Rajib Banerjee on Monday said DVC has released 90,000 cusecs of water since Sunday, adding to the woes of flood-hit residents.

Officials said nearly 56,000 houses were fully damaged, while 272,488 houses suffered partial damage. Crops spread over 5,18,173 hectares have been destroyed.
