A constable was arrested and suspended along with three other constables and a police station chief in Ghaziabad was sent to police lines after a senior officer found lapses during a surprise check, an official said Thursday.
The constables at Link Road Police Station had detained a man and a woman and liquor bottles were found in their room Wednesday night, a police inspector said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dharmendra Yadav, after his surprise check, ordered a departmental inquiry against constables Sushil Kumar, Brijesh Yadav, Guddu Kumar and Virender Kumar and transferred police station incharge Nandji Yadav to police lines, said an inspector tasked to conduct the probe and give a report within a week.
Constable Guddu Kumar was arrested while the three others were absconding, police said.
During a check on Independence Day eve, the SSP found that the constables had detained a man and a woman in a room in the Link Road Police Station. Liquor bottles and eatables were also found there.
The illegal presence of constable Sushil Kumar, who had been sent to police lines Monday, at the police station would also be looked into during the inquiry, the inspector said.
The woman and man, who were found in the police station Wednesday night, told the SSP that they had been illegally detained by the constables, the inspector said.
Three constables managed to slip away from the police station while the SSP was trying to ascertain the facts from the woman and man, he said.
