Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday urged police officers to work towards making the northeastern states free from corruption, terror and intrusion of foreigners.

"We need to free Northeast from corruption, terror and intrusion of foreigners. If we work with honesty, we will have a better country, and you can," he said in his address during the passing out parade at the North Eastern Police Academy here, 25 km from Meghalaya capital Shillong.

Acknowledging that the biggest challenge for northeastern states is terrorism, Sonowal said that the most dangerous threat is terrorists, as they are armed with sophisticated weapons and resources.

"We need to fight against terrorism to ensure safety and security of the people. You will be needed anywhere in the country and you have to prove your cut wherever you are assigned. There will be testing time, and you will have prove that you are worth with sacrifice and dedication," he told the new police officers.

Altogether, 98 trainees of the 42nd batch including 86 deputy superintendents of police, 11 sub inspectors and one assistant sub inspector completed the 48 weeks training. The trainees included 58 from Assam, 15 from Arunachal Pradesh, 9 from Tripura, 7 from Nagaland, 5 from Mizoram, 2 from Manipur and one each from Sikkim and Meghalaya.
