Famous Gandhian thinker Narayan Desai passed away in Gujarat's Valsad district early Sunday following prolonged illness. He was 90.
Desai, who contributed to the literary world in various languages apart from Gujarati and actively participated in a number of national movements, is survived by daughter Sanghmitra and two sons -- Nachiketa and Aflatoon Desai. His wife died 26 years ago.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his condolence message tweeted: "Narayanbhai Desai will be remembered as a scholarly personality who brought Gandhi ji closer to the masses. Sad to hear of his demise. RIP."
Desai breathed his last at 4.00 a.m. at his Vedchi village. The cremation ceremony was performed in the afternoon on the banks of Valmiki river, Narayan's youngest son Aflatoon Desai told IANS over phone.
Narayan's pyre was lit by his daughter Sanghmitra.
The last rites were attended by various intellectuals including Gujarat Vidyapeeth chancellor Ela Bhat and historian Rajender Patel.
Desai had been conferred various coveted awards including the Sahitya Akademi award, Moortidevi award and Unesco's Peace award.
