German Angelique Kerber overcame Czech Katerina Siniakova on Monday to advance to the third round in the Madrid Open tennis tournament.
Kerber, who won 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 over the 20-year-old Czech, is set to meet either Russia's Maria Sharapova or Canada's Genie Bouchard in the next round, reports Efe.
Meanwhile, Czech Karolina Pliskova was defeated by Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 3-6, 3-6, advancing to the tournament's third round in an hour and 18 minutes.
The poor performance by the Czech was in stark contrast to her level of play since the beginning of 2017, during which she has won 25 matches, and the Doha and Brisbane titles.
