Gold bars smuggled from Myanmar and worth over Rs.7 crore were seized by Assam Rifles in Manipur and two smugglers arrested, an official said on Saturday.
Assam Rifles spokesman Akhil Dhawan said a mobile check post of 2 Assam Rifles intercepted a truck near Lilong area in Thoubal district.
During a search of the truck, gold bars weighing 28 kg and worth Rs.7.11 crore were seized. The gold bars were hidden inside the battery cabinet of the truck.
The spokesman said the arrested smugglers -- Md. Arif, 24, and Sayed, 17 -- were handed over to the customs department along with the seized gold.
A customs official said the gold was smuggled from Myanmar.
"We have started interrogating the arrested people to find out the kingpin behind the gold smuggling," the official told IANS.
