Guinea's ex-junta leader indicted over massacre of 157

Guinea's ex-junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara has been indicted by Guinean judges investigating the massacre of 157 people on September 28, 2009, a judicial source told Xinhua news agency.

Camara who has been living in exile in Burkina Faso, was questioned by the judges in the capital Ouagadougou.

The judicial authorities said Camara would still undergo further questioning in this matter which the government wanted concluded, and the hearing of the case might begin in December this year.

The indictment on Wednesday happened just a few days after a visit to Conakry by Fatou Bensouda, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Upon arrival in Conakry on July 2, Bensouda said she had come to evaluate progress made in investigations into the massacre launched by Guinean authorities in conformity with their obligation as those with the first responsibility to prosecute perpetrators of crimes that can be charged at ICC.

The massacre at a Conakry stadium during protests against Dadis Camara left 157 people dead and hundreds of women and girls were raped.

Besides Camara, 14 other individuals were recently indicted over the same matter which the Guinean judiciary has promised to conclude within reasonable time.
