A girl student of a college here allegedly tried to immolate herself Monday to protest against the college management, police said.

Pinky Chauhan was among over 1,000 students who were protesting against the management of the Government Post-Graduate College for Women near Sector 14 and Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak for giving them low marks "intentionally".

Police said the girl, a resident of Kasan village near Manesar and a B.Sc second year student, was admitted to a local hospital with 90 percent burn injuries. She was, later, referred to a hospital in Delhi.

"Hundreds of student from science and commerce faculties were declared failed in the recent examinations. Earlier, college principal Usha Malik had threatened students that she would spoil their future," a protesting student told IANS.

Over 1,000 students Saturday blocked the traffic on Mehrauli-Gurgaon road for hours and staged a 'dharna' in front of the college main gate to protest against the college management and the university.

Students vandalised the principal's office, canteen and lab after Monday's incident.

B.S. Sandhu, the controller of examination of the university, also reached here after the incident and assured students that their answer sheets would be re-checked.

Meanwhile, a senior government official told IANS: "Principal Usha Malik was transferred with immediate effect."

Nearly 6,500 students are currently studying in the college.
