Gurgaon traffic police notch up a record of challans

Gurgaon traffic oolice's record of issuing 14,896 'challans' or tickets for traffic violations in a single day will be included in the Limca Book of Records, a senior officer said Thursday.

Nearly 14,900 tickets for traffic offences were served by police here in 14 hours on Wednesday, setting a one-day record in the country.

The fines were part of an intensive traffic drive after police decided to mark "Zero Tolerance Day".

No one was spared -- even Gurgaon Mayor Vimal Yadav was flagged down near Hero Honda Chowk here on Wednesday evening.

Yadav was ticketed for not wearing a seat-belt.

The drive started at 8 a.m. and involved nearly 300 cops deployed at 100 spots.

"Delhi Police served 13,000 fines in 2014 while Bengaluru police's record was over 12,000 'challans' in a day. Now, Gurgaon breaks all records and deserves a place in Limca Book of Records," Ashok Bakshi, Gurgaon's assistant commissioner of police (traffic), told IANS.

"We will soon share the details of the exercise with Limca officials," he said.

Bakshi said that on a normal day, the number of 'challans' issued are in the range of 1,000-1,500.

The Motors Vehicle Act, 1988, lists 72 traffic offences but police were instructed to focus primarily on breaking speed limit, using cell phone while driving, jumping traffic signals, driving without seat-belt, smoking, wrong-side parking and driving in wrong lane.
