The Haryana State Pollution Control Board has imposed prohibition on establishing new pyrolysis plants (for extraction of fuel oil from waste rubber tyres) in the state till the study in the local effects caused on health and environment by them is completed, a spokesperson said on Thursday.
The board spokesperson said that the decision of prohibition on these plants has been taken in view of reports that carbon particles emitted from these plants are very harmful to human respiratory system if proper control measures are not adopted by the plants.
"Certain complaints have been received through CM's Window and district administration from the nearby residents of these plants regarding the spreading of air and water pollution and odour nuisance from these plants.
"A few accidents that have occurred in such plants due to inappropriate operation of pyrolysis reactor as well as due to inadequate pollution abatement and safety measures adopted by these plants," the spokesperson said.
There are 82 such plants in various district in Haryana, including in Jind, Bhiwani, Panchkula, Kaithal, Mahendergarh, Sonipat, Jhajjar, Yamuna Nagar, Karnal, Fathehabad, Hisar and Ambala.
The study on the harmful effects of these plants will be completed in six months.
