A Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) with Haryana's irrigation department was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 40,000 as bribe from a contractor, Director General of Police (State Vigilance Bureau) Sheel Madhur said here on Wednesday.

"Acting on a complaint filed by Mahender Kumar, a resident of Haryana's Sonipat, our team arrested SDO Mukesh Gupta," Madhur said.

Kumar had taken a contract to build a bridge on the Karnal-Indri road for Rs 30 lakh.

"After completing the assigned work, Kumar requested (Gupta) to release his remaining Rs 10,35,000 but Gupta refused to release the pending amount until he got Rs 40,000," said Madhur.

He said the vigilance team arrested the accused while he was accepting the cash.
