The Delhi High Court on Friday directed the Commissioners of the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) to appear before it and apprise it of the waste management situation in the national capital.
A division bench of Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Jayant Nath asked the senior officials to appear before it on December 1.
The court direction came after it was informed by amicus curiae and senior counsel Kailash Vasdev that the Municipal Corporations of Delhi are not adhering to the rules regarding solid waste management and regulations of landfill sites.
The court also observed that pollution watchdog, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), has not initiated proceedings against the civic corporations for non-compliance of the rules, and asked DPCC Member-Secretary to explain whether anyone has been prosecuted for causing pollution in the national capital region.
The court observed that the DPCC has the responsibility to check pollution in the national capital.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation initiated by it on the issue of air pollution in the national capital.
