Travel in government buses in Bangalore and across Karnataka and to neighbouring states will be costly from midnight Saturday as authorities announced a hike in the fares.
Fares in Bangalore would go up by a minimum of Re.1 and maximum of Rs.3, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) said in a statement late Saturday.
The hike would affect those traveling in ordinary buses, which an overwhelming majority of the people use. At present, the minimum fare for an adult in these buses is Rs.5 and maximum Rs. 35.
Travel within Karnataka and to neighbouring states by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses would cost 10.5 percent more on average, the Corporation said.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy justified the hike saying it was necessitated by frequent increase in diesel prices and wage increase for the employees.
