The BJP Friday filed a police complaint demanding the arrest of Trinamool Congress legislator Nirmal Majhi who had called for burning "real human effigies" of doctors who earlier burnt effigies of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader J.C. Pal who filed the complaint with Bidhannagar police forwarded its copies to Governor K.N. Tripathi, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and state Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee.

"His remarks are tantamount to criminal offence and he should be immediately arrested. Moreover, by making such a comment he has belittled the medical profession and his registration as a practitioner should also be cancelled," said Pal.

Majhi had made the comments Wednesday reacting to the CPI-M-affiliated Association of Health Service Doctors (AHSD) protesting the suspension of several health officials, including North Bengal Medical College and Hospital principal Anup Kumar Roy.

Blaming them for the raging encephalitis menace that has claimed more than 200 lives, Banerjee in July had suspended the health officials.

Majhi had defended the action on the officials saying that Roy and others neglected their responsibilities by working only for two days and remaining in Kolkata for the rest of the week.

Despite a growing outrage over his remarks, Majhi defended them.

"Should I garland those who have threatened our chief minister and burnt her effigies? I am not repentant. I have not said anything wrong," Majhi said Friday.
