As sweltering heat torments residents in other parts of the country, Kashmir continued to remain cool at 20 degrees Celsius, a weather official said on Monday.

Most locals in the Valley are yet to wear summer clothes as the traditional heavy tweed over-garment called the 'Pheran' is still their best bet against the morning and evening chill here.

"The minimum temperature was 6.0 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Monday which is three degrees below normal. The maximum temperature was 20.0 degrees here on Sunday," the official of the local MET department said.

"Gulmarg recorded 1.1 as the night's lowest temperature while it was 1.4 in Pahalgam."

"Leh and Kargil towns of Ladakh region recorded minus 0.7 and 1.5 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperatures," the official said.

The minimum temperature in Jammu city was 18.5 degrees Celsius on Monday which is again three degrees below normal.

The maximum in Jammu city was 33.8 degrees on Sunday.

Among other towns in the Jammu region, Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine base camp town of Katra recorded 17.7, Batote 9.8. Bannihal 7.5, Bhaderwah 6.3 and Udhampur 11.6 as the minimum temperature today.

The weather office has forecast generally fair weather across Jammu and Kashmir during the next two days with isolated light rain and thunderstorm at some places.

The rush of tourists in the Valley has steadily increased.
