US Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Sri Lanka on May 2 on his first trip to the country.

In Colombo, Kerry will meet government leaders, civil society members and other representatives from the country's different communities, said an official statement.

He will express US support for their vision "for a more peaceful, stable and prosperous future" for Sri Lanka, the statement said.

It will be the first visit to Colombo by a Secretary of State since 2005.

Kerry will also visit Kenya beginning on May 3 and then travel to Djibouti on May 5.
