Khartoum suspends Red Cross activities in Sudan

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been notified by the Sudanese authorities for suspending its activities in Sudan, a source said.

"The ICRC has received a letter from the Sudanese Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) asking the organisation to suspend all its activities in Sudan as of Feb 1," Xinhua quoted an ICRC source as saying while requesting anonymity.

"Accordingly, we have suspended our activities," the source added, noting that the reason behind the suspension was relating to the ICRC work plan for 2014.

The ICRC had embarked on dialogue with the HAC to find a solution for the difference, he added.

The ICRC started working in Sudan in 1978.

According to ICRC website, since 2003 the organisation has been responding to needs arising from the hostilities in Darfur, where ethnic violence over resources and sporadic military clashes continue to displace and harm civilians

It also helps people affected by the conflict in Darfur, provide seed, tools, food and water, and re-establish contact between people separated by the fighting in Sudan.
