The 24-year-old man arrested for alleged involvement in the gang rape of a 21-year-old woman in the city was acquainted with the victim since the past few days, police said Tuesday.
Mohammad Hamid, who was arrested Monday, was remanded to police custody till Feb 3 by a court during the day.
"Hamid has claimed that he was familiar with the victim for the last 14 to 15 days," said Joint Commissioner (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh adding that the vehicle inside which the girl was raped has been seized.
"The accused said he was drunk when the incident occurred and has admitted having sexual intercourse with the victim," added Ghosh.
The victim, a mall employee, was allegedly gang-raped in a truck while she was travelling back home in Howrah from Kidderpore here Sunday night. Injured in the assault, she is recuperating in a city nursing home.
