In a bid to curb rash driving, Kolkata Police was putting in place special security measures at the city flyovers to avert road accidents, a top cop said here on Wednesday.
"We lose a number of lives in Kolkata as well as in other parts of the state (West Bengal) due to rash driving. What we have seen is that some people indulge in speeding on new flyovers," city Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said after a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna.
"We have posted people who would come to know the speed of the cars while going through those lanes. We are also installing CCTVs and monitors on both sides of the flyovers to monitor the cars that are overspeeding," Kumar said.
The officer said the speed limit violators would face immediate prosecution and punishment.
"Apart from the punishment if we can ensure the assurance of punishment then those instances or reckless driving would reduce," he added.
Addressing the state assembly earlier this month, the Chief Minister had expressed concern over the loss of lives due to the bike racing and promised a new law to stop the menace.
Banerjee had ordered the administration to snatch the vehicles of the bike racers.
"Innocent lives are lost due to the bike races. I will tell the administration to take away the bikes of these bike racers. The way they speed... they drive so recklessly. We will have to bring in a strong law. There is a law but that is not enough," she had said.
