Alipore Zoo authorities here are closely monitoring the adaptation process of a red kangaroo - the only kangaroo in an Indian zoo - after its enclosure was opened to public viewing recently.

Rocked by the deaths of four kangaroos after they were brought from the Czech Republic in 2011, the authorities are leaving nothing to chance to make sure that the last remaining red kangaroo is comfortable and healthy.

The female animal was born in mid-2012 in the zoo. Its mother, one of the four procured from the Czech Republic, died nine months after giving birth.

"The kangaroos died of acute myopathy (muscle disease) following chest infection that led to deterioration in their health. They died in a series. The survivor, born in our zoo, is now two-and-a-half years old.

"It was previously only partially visible to the public and was in a protective area. Since a few weeks it is open for public viewing," Kanailal Ghosh, zoo director, told IANS Monday.

"We are constantly monitoring the situation. If we notice any aberration in its behaviour and health we will take steps immediately. This is the only kangaroo in an Indian zoo," Ghosh said.

Based on how well the female marsupial adapts, officials will start the breeding process. They are scouting for possible mates in other countries.

"At this moment, its breeding is not of immediate concern. First we need to make sure it adapts and survives," Ghosh said, adding that there has been no positive response yet to proposals for possible mates.
