Singers Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber swept the MTV European Music Awards (EMA) by collecting two prizes each at a ceremony that paid tribute to late musician Prince.
At the ceremony held here on Sunday, host Bebe Rexha said the EMA trophies had been turned purple in memory of the "Purple rain" hitmaker who died in April, reports mirror.co.uk.
Gaga took home the Best Female and Best Look while Bieber beat "Hello" hitmaker Adele in the Best Song category for the hit track "Sorry".
The Canadian singer also won Best Fans, marking the third year in a row that he has collected the prize.
However, Bieber lost out to social media star and singer Shawn Mendes in the Best Male category while Dutch DJ Martin Garrix collected two awards.
Garrix, 20, who launched his own record label earlier this year, won Best Electro Act and Best World Stage awards.
Despite being nominated for three awards including Best Female, Adele left empty-handed. The British success came from Coldplay, who picked up the Best Rock award.
Drake was named Best Hip-Hop Act while American rock band Green Day were handed the global icon prize for their contribution to music, according to mirror.co.uk.
Collecting their award, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said it was "really nice to be in Europe right now".
He said: "It's nice to be out of America just for a second because of this horrendous election that's going on right now.
"Our entire country is about to have one big collective heart attack."
