A kingpin of an inter-state gang of automobile thieves was arrested in west Delhi in the early hours of Thursday after a scuffle with two beat constables who were fired upon by the accused, police said.
Irshad, 25, heads a gang from Mewat region of Haryana and had come to Delhi to steal high-end cars as well as trucks, police said.
Police said the constables hailed a Swift Desire car moving in the Kirti Nagar area under suspicious circumstances to stop around 2 a.m. Its five occupants, in the age group of 25-30 years, assaulted constables Vijay Kumar and Sandeep Kumar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said that during the scuffle, Irshad opened fire at the constables but missed.
While he was reloading his countrymade pistol, he was overpowered with the help of two locals. Police are trying to arrest his four accomplices who escaped from the spot.
